What is Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)?

Generative engine optimization is the practice of making a brand more likely to be surfaced and cited by AI systems such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Google's AI Overviews. It focuses on being present, quotable and corroborated across the sources those systems retrieve from, rather than on ranking in a list.

Understanding Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)

Generative engines answer by synthesising several retrieved sources rather than ranking one. That changes what wins. Position one matters less than being one of the handful of sources retrieved, and being retrievable depends on clear factual statements, an unambiguous entity identity, and corroboration on sites other than your own.

Three things move the needle disproportionately. Consistency of your entity across the web — the same brand name, description and details everywhere, so retrieval systems resolve them to one entity rather than several. Presence in the aggregator content models lean on, which for services means directories, comparison pages and community discussion, not just your own domain. And clean, extractable factual writing, because a model deciding what to quote takes the source that states the fact plainly.

Allowing AI crawlers is the prerequisite most sites get backwards. Blocking GPTBot or ClaudeBot to protect content also removes you from the corpus those systems answer from — the same trade as blocking Googlebot in 2005. Unless there is a specific licensing reason, the traffic and citation upside outweighs the scraping concern.

Key points

  • Answers synthesise several sources — being retrieved beats ranking first
  • One consistent entity identity across every mention of the brand
  • Third-party corroboration weighs more than your own claims
  • Plain factual statements are what actually get quoted
  • Allow AI crawlers unless you have a licensing reason not to

Where this gets oversold

The honest caveat

GEO is measurable only indirectly. There is no rank tracker for 'how often does ChatGPT mention us', and vendors selling precise GEO metrics are mostly selling prompt sampling. Track branded search volume and direct traffic as proxies and treat single-prompt tests as anecdote.

Questions

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) — related questions

How do I get my business mentioned by ChatGPT?

Be present and consistent in the sources it retrieves from: a clear entity identity on your own site, the same details in directories and profiles, third-party mentions that corroborate what you claim, and crawlers allowed. There is no submission process.

Should we block AI crawlers from our website?

Generally no. Blocking them removes you from the corpus those systems answer from, which forfeits both citations and referral traffic. Block only if you have a specific content-licensing position, and understand the visibility you are trading away.
