What is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)?

Answer engine optimization is the practice of structuring content so search and AI systems can extract a direct answer from it. It targets featured snippets, voice results and AI Overviews by pairing an explicit question with a short, self-contained answer that makes sense when lifted out of the page.

Understanding Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)

Answer engines do not extract pages, they extract passages. The unit that gets selected is consistently the same shape: a question stated as a heading, followed immediately by a forty-to-sixty word answer that resolves the question completely without depending on anything around it. Content that buries the answer in the fourth paragraph of a narrative is not competing for that slot regardless of how good it is.

This changes how a page is written rather than what it says. Answer first, elaboration second — the inverse of how most marketing copy is structured. Headings phrased as the actual question a person types. Facts stated plainly enough to be quoted, with the qualifying detail below rather than woven through the sentence.

The obvious objection is that a user who gets their answer in the SERP never clicks. That is partly true and worth accepting: the traffic that remains is better qualified, and appearing as the cited answer builds the brand recognition that drives direct and branded search later. Being absent from the answer does not recover the click — it just hands it to whoever was cited.

Key points

  • The extraction unit is a passage, not a page
  • Question as heading, self-contained answer immediately after
  • Forty to sixty words is the reliable extraction length
  • Answer first, nuance second — inverted from marketing copy
  • FAQPage and QAPage schema make the pairing machine-explicit

The honest caveat

Optimising for extraction reduces clicks on informational queries. That is a real trade, and the right response is to apply AEO to informational content while keeping commercial pages built to convert rather than to be quoted.

Questions

Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) — related questions

How is AEO different from SEO?

SEO optimises to rank a page in a list of links. AEO optimises so a specific passage can be extracted and presented as the answer itself. They overlap heavily in practice, but AEO changes content structure rather than just targeting and authority.

Does AEO reduce website traffic?

On informational queries, often yes — the user gets the answer without clicking. The compensation is qualification and brand: the clicks you keep are from people who need more than the answer, and being the cited source drives later branded search.
