What is Conversion Rate Optimization (CRO)?

Conversion rate optimization is the practice of increasing the share of visitors who complete a desired action — an enquiry, a signup, a purchase. It works through research into why visitors do not convert, followed by tested changes, rather than through applying generic best practices.

Understanding Conversion Rate Optimization (CRO)

CRO is cheaper than traffic. Doubling a conversion rate and doubling traffic produce the same revenue, but one requires no additional ad spend and compounds against every future visitor. Which is why it is usually the higher-return investment for a site that already gets meaningful traffic.

The research half is what separates it from guessing. Analytics show where visitors leave; session recordings and form analytics show what they were doing when they left; user testing and sales-call notes show why. Changes derived from that evidence outperform changes derived from a list of best practices, because the reason a specific page underperforms is usually specific.

Statistical discipline is where most programmes fail. Low-traffic sites cannot detect small improvements reliably, and calling a test early on a promising trend produces confident conclusions that do not replicate. Below a few hundred conversions per variant per month, qualitative research and fixing obvious friction beats A/B testing outright.

Key points

  • Compounds against all future traffic without additional spend
  • Research first — analytics for where, recordings and interviews for why
  • Evidence-derived changes beat generic best practices
  • Reliable A/B testing needs volume most sites do not have
  • Below that volume, fix obvious friction instead of testing
Worth knowing

Where this gets oversold

The honest caveat

Most sites do not have the traffic for statistically valid A/B testing, and running tests anyway produces confident conclusions from noise. At low volume, qualitative research and removing obvious friction is both cheaper and more honest.

Questions

Conversion Rate Optimization (CRO) — related questions

How much traffic do we need for A/B testing?

Enough for a few hundred conversions per variant per month to detect realistic improvements reliably. Below that, tests take months or produce false positives — qualitative research and fixing obvious friction is the better use of the same effort.

Is CRO better than buying more traffic?

Usually, if you already have meaningful traffic. A conversion improvement applies to every future visitor at no recurring cost, whereas traffic must be bought again each month. Sites with very little traffic need traffic first.
